It was a hard night where I tossed and turned with a horrible cough and a constricted throat – and I was not even sick! However, upon hearing my alarm, I was afraid that I would have to cancel because I was not sure if I had a voice to speak. (For speakers, that is a NO-NO. I had only canceled once in my life.) (more…)

It has been said that how we wait for others oftentimes is an indication of our hearts. If we are able to wait calmly, people say that we are ‘patient’; the converse, then, being that we are impatient.  What is  not often emphasized is the condition of our hearts as we wait. Waiting gives us a window into our soul and core. (more…)

Something God has been reminding me over and over again is my worth and value in Him.  I’ve been experiencing revelation on this through various experiences.  It all started a little over a year ago, when a friend of mine got engaged and came to visit me in LA.  During her visit, I asked her questions of how her engagement had come about.  (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

One of the challenges I have as an Asian American woman is resisting the Superwoman image.  For instance, there’s a part of me that wants to be a good mom and wife and a domestic Martha Stewart.  There’s another part of me that says I have to excel in everything (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

I recently read a short article in the Biola University magazine entitled “Who’s Yo Mama?” in which Joseph Hellerman discusses the passage in Luke 11:27-28 in which a woman calls out to Jesus, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”  Jesus replies, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”  Hellerman points out that the woman’s statement points to the patriarchal values at that time.  (more…)

All my life, I have had an unexplainable aversion to large groups of Asian Americans.  For instance, when my husband Will wanted to check out a dumpling food truck that was swarming with Asian Americans, I felt a strong inner reluctance to approach that crowd.  Another example — when I first started college, I initially felt a repulsion to the Asian American campus fellowship.  Most of the time, I attributed this reaction to my introverted tendencies — but why the aversion to Asian Americans in particular?

It’s only recently that I’ve begun to unpack this strange reaction.  (more…)

For the fellow women friends with whom I journey, inspired by I John 4:18-19:  “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because he first loved us”  and John 8:58:  “’Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I AM!’”

So now that our book is published, our next steps are to “get the word out,” notifying our family, friends, and communities about the book, and inviting them to celebrate and support us by coming to our book events and buying and recommending our book to others, hopefully getting it into the hands of those who will benefit by it.  Despite all the labor involved thus far of brainstorming, drafting, writing, editing, revising and re-revising our manuscript, I have to admit that there is no task I dread more in this publication process than I do of having to “sell” our book. (more…)

I recently attended a seminar on a personality theory called the Enneagram. In this theory, there are different personality types, numbered 1-9. The Enneagram personality types delve into the motivations behind our actions, thoughts, and habits. I took the seminar with thirty other chaplains of a mix of different races and ages, and I turned out to be Type 3, labeled the “Achiever” or the “Performer.” (more…)
