“I went to the first Asian American Symposium at Fuller in November 2009 and it was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed it for at least three reasons: 1) It was a rare occasion where both Asian American church leaders and Asian American academicians met at one place to discuss and share about our common experiences and struggles as Asian American Christians. I felt that I was not alone in my struggle for identity and meaning as an ethnic minority in both the church and the academic world; 2) Dr. Tran’s lectures about our Asian American identities as “off against” and his thoughts on why Asian American church is the future really spoke to my heart. The responses of the panelists added a variety of perspectives to help me think about the issues in a holistic way; and 3) The banquet of good food with the company of fellow Asian American friends, together with dance, music, as well as worship songs created a unique aesthetic and delightful experience. It felt like God’s kingdom was on earth at that very moment.
