My mind jumped first to my darker memories when I was asked to write about gender, recognizing the ever-present concession that being a woman does not serve me well in this world. I can easily name several instances where I have experienced my gender in a negative way. (more…)

It is quite something to think of myself, at this very moment, as the embodiment of several generations: a daughter, a granddaughter, a wife, a mother and hopefully one day, a grandmother. Every single generation that I bear within me has shaped me in ways that are too complex for me to understand. (more…)

I still remember it was a great relief for me when I first read about empathy. I am not a person of many words, so I always felt inadequate when I couldn’t offer any brilliant solutions to the ones pouring out their problems and heartaches in front of me. Once I realized that what they really needed was someone to be present with them and to listen to them, I stopped trying to come up with clever words or ideas to solve their problems. (more…)

On Daniel Goleman’s website some years ago, he described the “Traits of a Motivated Leader.” These folk are motivated less by external factors (salary, status, and so on) — and have an ability to achieve beyond the expectations of others.  They learn for the simple joy of learning; they achieve success because they have an inherent passion for the work itself. I am capable, independent, and driven. This was the message that was modeled by my father during the years of my mother’s time away. She was physically present in the home, but her mental health, impacted by a brain tumor, prevented her from being her normal self. (more…)

When I provide therapy for couples who are struggling in the face of their child’s challenges, I often find that the role of ‘parent’ to their child can easily overthrow the role of ‘lover’ to one’s life partner. There have been many sessions when focus on a couple’s marital relationship significantly benefited their parent-child relationships. (more…)

After graduating and entering my first years as Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) staff, I found myself sharing with the men on my staff team that I had a “conviction” about women not initiating and therefore would never call them on the phone and would only return calls – even ministry-related business calls. (more…)

“For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. Isaiah 54:5

Growing up, I’ve heard God described in many ways. Father, Provider, Healer, Shepherd, Redeemer, Husband. I’ve seen God demonstrate himself in so many ways as the first few, but husband? It’s such a hard concept to grasp. (more…)

One of my denomination’s (Presbyterian Church (USA)) confessions of faith includes this sentence:  “the Spirit gives us courage…  to hear the voices of peoples long silenced…” (A Brief Statement of Faith, 70).   It takes courage to hear the silenced voices but it takes more courage for those voices to speak out . . . I was especially delighted to hear from Asian American women scholars, leaders and writers who wrote the book Mirrored Reflections: Reframing Biblical Characters.  One of the ongoing challenges doing ministry in many Asian American contexts is that Asian American women are often still doubly marginalized in male dominated ministries of Asian American churches.  The contributors of Mirrored Reflections have weaved their stories with the stories of women in the Bible that results in fresh and often startling interpretations that inform and empower Asian American women and men.

I have a rather embarrassing confession to make:  For the years that I’ve been married (a little over four years), I have been totally uninvolved and unaware of our household financial situation.  I take the blame for this — not only do I seem to have an unexplainable inner repulsion to anything having to do with finances, but also I have extremely short-term memory in regards to the subject.  For example, from time to time, my husband has tried to sit me down and explain our financial status, but when questioned about it thirty seconds later, I’ll have found that I have no recollection of any of the numbers or amounts he was just talking about — in one ear and out the other!
