In terms of “give-and-take” in relationships, this time in my life — as a full-time mom of two kids ages 3 and 1 — has definitely been a season of taking. Taking sounds easy, but for me, it’s not. I like to be the giver, the contributor, the leader — using my gifts and talents for the benefit of others. (Some may argue that I am, in fact, giving to my kids. This is true, but I am speaking in terms of my relationship with the church.) (more…)

I have a confession to make: I’m not very good at using those self-checkout machines at the grocery store. Somehow I end up losing track of which items I’ve scanned, or my reusable bags mess up the weighing mechanism and the attendant on duty has to release me from a locked system. (more…)

Despite the fact that I’ve been getting my ducks lined up to start the ordination process and I’m enrolled in a spiritual direction certification program, the day-to-day reality of my life right now is that of a stay-at-home mom.  I’ve certainly had my ups and downs, good days and bad days, but on the whole, it’s been a great joy.

One of my greatest struggles, however, is watching those around me accomplish much and do impressive things with their passions and vocations.  I find myself thinking, I have gifts and can do good work too! but the reality is that no, I really can’t do very much right now as a mom of a 1-year-old.   (more…)

All I Once Held Dear

Ann Chen Malawi groupBy Ann Chen

Most of my adult life in America has been spent trying to grow to become a woman that others could look up to: somebody that could influence and contribute to the lives of others and who others can grow and learn from. For the most part, it was with good intentions. I wanted to help others grow in their encounters with Christ, and it was for those reasons that I made ministry, career, and life decisions that I did. (more…)

It was a hard night where I tossed and turned with a horrible cough and a constricted throat — and I was not even sick! However, upon hearing my alarm, I was afraid that I would have to cancel because I was not sure if I had a voice to speak. (For speakers, that is a NO-NO. I had only canceled once in my life.) (more…)

It has been said that how we wait for others oftentimes is an indication of our hearts. If we are able to wait calmly, people say that we are ‘patient’; the converse, then, being that we are impatient.  What is  not often emphasized is the condition of our hearts as we wait. Waiting gives us a window into our soul and core. (more…)

Something God has been reminding me over and over again is my worth and value in Him.  I’ve been experiencing revelation on this through various experiences.  It all started a little over a year ago, when a friend of mine got engaged and came to visit me in LA.  During her visit, I asked her questions of how her engagement had come about.  (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

One of the challenges I have as an Asian American woman is resisting the Superwoman image.  For instance, there’s a part of me that wants to be a good mom and wife and a domestic Martha Stewart.  There’s another part of me that says I have to excel in everything (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

I recently read a short article in the Biola University magazine entitled “Who’s Yo Mama?” in which Joseph Hellerman discusses the passage in Luke 11:27-28 in which a woman calls out to Jesus, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”  Jesus replies, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”  Hellerman points out that the woman’s statement points to the patriarchal values at that time.  (more…)

All my life, I have had an unexplainable aversion to large groups of Asian Americans.  For instance, when my husband Will wanted to check out a dumpling food truck that was swarming with Asian Americans, I felt a strong inner reluctance to approach that crowd.  Another example — when I first started college, I initially felt a repulsion to the Asian American campus fellowship.  Most of the time, I attributed this reaction to my introverted tendencies — but why the aversion to Asian Americans in particular?

It’s only recently that I’ve begun to unpack this strange reaction.  (more…)
