Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:4-5

During my English teaching years, I learned that there’s so much power in redeeming your pain and wounds instead of hiding or running away from them. Our family immigrated to the United States from Korea on a business visa which expired shortly after we arrived. All my childhood, adolescent and young adult years, I lived in fear and hopelessness of being undocumented. (more…)

“If anything crazy happens, you’ll call me, okay?”

“You got it. So I’m off the meds completely? You’re sure?”

“For now.”

As part of an exercise for a spiritual formation program, I had the opportunity to construct a life map of my own.  As I answered various prompts and filled in event after event in my life — negative and positive childhood memories, encouragement and criticism from major figures in life, etc. — something wonderful emerged from my life map.

There have been negative life events that have shaped me and given me false beliefs of myself and of God.  In the first few weeks of the program, we talked about negative cultural and family influences and how they project for us a false image of God. (more…)

The following is a poem I wrote in reflection of the Easter season and my experience as a marriage and family therapist for children, adults, couples, and families. Traditionally, Christian faith practice has relied heavily upon verbal expression.  However, with the digital revolution, the mode of communication has shifted to multi-sensory expression.  Evidence of this can be seen as visual art and images cover the pages of Facebook, and more and more people find themselves swept along by the changing medium of communication.

By Rev Dr Young Lee Hertig, Symposium Organizer

The third Asian American Equipping Symposium, entitled “Healing of Memories,” took place at Fuller Theological Seminary on March 19-20, 2012. Its objective was to create a space for Asian American male and female leaders to understand the interdependent dimensions of pain within our families and churches — for as one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers. What are your ministry passions?  How did you discern these passions in your life?

While growing up in a Taiwanese American church, I started mentoring sisters and seeing a lot of things I didn’t know how to address from a purely biblical point of view.  (more…)

For the fellow women friends with whom I journey, inspired by I John 4:18-19:  “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because he first loved us”  and John 8:58:  “’Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I AM!’”
