I remember trying to grasp the fullness of God’s holiness when I was an MDiv student.  I had grown up in the Holiness tradition, where personal piety and righteous living were highly valued.  Being a pastor’s kid, no less, I wasn’t allowed to smoke, drink, do drugs, use “cuss” words (though, elementary-school-aged, I knew plenty — even wrote one on the wall of our apartment once because my sister made me SO MAD!).  Those symbols of personal piety were the “normal” ones.  As Nazarenes, however, we were also not allowed to dance or watch movies.  (We, as a family, had to sneak into a showing of the original Star Wars, a year after it came on the scene, so that no one in our church would see us.) Change: The Cost of Resistance

Last week, I overheard a conversation in a furniture shop in Ohio, in some town that bordered Pennsylvania. What initially piqued my interest was the statement, “Liberalism is a mental disease.” The registered Republican that I am, I naturally had to hear the rest of the comment and inched closer to this group of White individuals. It’s been my observation that no matter how great or glorious the  institution, the higher up you go in leadership, the more ugliness you see.  Ugliness in terms of power plays, decision-making, or just the general muck that comes with politics.  At the same time, it seems that no matter how bad it gets in the upper realms of leadership, the “end-users” such as students, parishioners, etc. may actually be quite happy with the institution (more…)
