What have you been learning lately?

I am currently serving at Christian Community Alliance Church in their Junior High Ministry. I have learned a lot from the youth there, not just about faith, but about myself. One thing I learned is my lack of patience and the risk it has on the youth.

Recently, I got really frustrated with a few of my junior high girls and rebuked them harshly on the car ride back. (more…)

Late last year, it was decided that this blog needed to expand to represent the stories and voices of evangelical Asian American women leaders outside of the immediate AAWOL core group.  Getting busy and multi-tasking women with  ministry and familial responsibilities  to write blog entries understandably proved to be difficult.  (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

I’ve been going through a desert season of my life, feeling discouraged and low on hope.  One recent evening, the events of the day came rushing back to my memory and I had a sudden realization.  Earlier that day, I had been surrounded by women friends from my community group and we had an amazing time, breaking bread, laughing and crying together.  For many years, I had prayed for a solid community of Christian women friends in LA and it wasn’t until that moment that I realized that God had been faithful.  I never expected that these women would be the answer to my prayers nor did I expect they would share my love for yummy food!

I’ve been seeing this pattern in my life, over and over:  It seems that every good gift that I’ve received from God – usually in the form of significant people being brought into my life — has involved a long wait and the cultivation of patience.  During the waiting period, I tend to ask God, Why does it have to take this long? (more…)

All my life, I have had an unexplainable aversion to large groups of Asian Americans.  For instance, when my husband Will wanted to check out a dumpling food truck that was swarming with Asian Americans, I felt a strong inner reluctance to approach that crowd.  Another example — when I first started college, I initially felt a repulsion to the Asian American campus fellowship.  Most of the time, I attributed this reaction to my introverted tendencies — but why the aversion to Asian Americans in particular?

It’s only recently that I’ve begun to unpack this strange reaction.  (more…)

What have you been learning lately?

I’ve been in Taiwan this past year as a missionary, and it’s only very recently that I’ve realized that for most of my life until now, I didn’t like Taiwan; I didn’t like “Asianness.” Without realizing it, I had always judged how my parents and grandparents lived in Taiwan (more…)

In my Mirrored Reflections chapter, I commented on how my husband Bruce and I feel called to be ready to follow God’s lead at any moment’s notice, even to the point of having our suitcases packed and ready to go when such occasions arise.  As such, in the past few months, I have been gifted with opportunities to leave my home in California to be whisked to various places and people of prominence.  Through all my travels, I’ve marveled at God’s wonderful orchestration of my life and recently have begun pondering how easy it is for us to take for granted the small, everyday mercies that occur while living in God’s care. (more…)

“Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have it all. You can have it all—you just can’t have it all at the same time.” A former female boss of mine used to quote this to me, and it always helped me adjust to the different transitions of my life, whether from college to post-college life, singleness to marriage, or moving from the east coast to the west coast. Whenever I found myself lamenting a loss of any kind, I often reminded myself that each stage in life had its own unique set of losses and blessings. (more…)

Recently, while preparing for a sermon on the topic of stewardship and sustainability, I found an oasis that lifted me from the doom and gloom of the current disaster of our economy, exemplified by the slogan “Drill, baby, drill.” (more…)

I recently attended a seminar on a personality theory called the Enneagram. In this theory, there are different personality types, numbered 1-9. The Enneagram personality types delve into the motivations behind our actions, thoughts, and habits. I took the seminar with thirty other chaplains of a mix of different races and ages, and I turned out to be Type 3, labeled the “Achiever” or the “Performer.” (more…)
