Like many before me, as a first-generation immigrant to this country, my journey has been more than the geographical distance travelled. From having to figure out what vitamin D fortified milk means to realizing that someone’s commend of “interesting” does not, in any way imply interest in you or your ideas. The theme of “broadening worldviews” is near and dear to my heart and my life’s work. Since being mistaken more than twenty years ago — a young Chinese-American woman teaching music in a south Bronx public school — as a “take-out” cook by second graders in my class, opening up possibilities for others to see more than what they expect or know has been of critical importance. After 13 years of living in a quaint block in South Pasadena, we moved to Monterey Hills among a hill full of condos in mid-September. I am grateful for this new place, but leaving behind my house on my familiar old block, though still close by, was not easy.
Despite Southern California’s culture of driving everywhere, the old cul-de-sac where we used to live provided the rare privilege of walking to the neighborhood Trader Joe’s, farmers’ markets, local coffee shops, and stopping by my dear friends’ homes along the way. Unlike driving, walking in the neighborhood creates opportunities to make friends and catch up on the latest news on the block. (more…)

Grace Haah is the wife of Kevin Haah, founder and lead pastor of New City Church of Los Angeles. She has a B.A. in English from Bryn Mawr College, a law degree from Cornell, practiced law in upstate New York for a few years, and later worked in publishing before becoming a stay-at-home mom. In her spare time, Grace enjoys playing the piano and completing crossword puzzles. (more…)
