I’ve called the summer after my senior year in high school “the golden summer.”  I didn’t have a care in the world.  I think that may have been the only time in my life that I had ever felt so carefree.  My destination for college was set, and all I had to do was show up for work, and hang out with my friends all summer.  The memory of it shimmers in my mind, and the feelings of being so carefree tap into a deep sense of longing. It says in Proverbs 13:12, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”

I’ve always thought about this particular proverb in one particular way: When we hope for something, and it doesn’t happen, our hearts are sad. When it does, we find joy and life.  Who of us hasn’t had moments of disappointment as well as celebrations, and consequently, also our share of emotional peaks and valleys? (more…)

I’ve had several friends remark to me, “I’m glad I don’t have your job.” I take it as a backhanded compliment from people who have experienced enough of church life to know the demands and expectations placed on pastors. But having worked in secular industry and having friends in all sorts of jobs, I know that stress comes in all shapes and sizes.

Growing up, I’ve heard God described in many ways. Father, Provider, Healer, Shepherd, Redeemer, Husband. I’ve seen God demonstrate himself in so many ways as the first few, but husband? It’s such a hard concept to grasp. (more…)
