Hello everyone!

We appreciated all of you taking your precious time this past Saturday to celebrate our book with us. Being with you all and hearing how you resonate with our stories was, indeed, gratifying!  Naming the leadership journey of Asian American Christian women leaders was a seed that germinated three decades ago, and it has been a long and winding path of waiting patiently for God’s timing.  You all exceeded our expectations by showing up and affirming the hunger for such stories as in Mirrored Reflections!

There is a power of telling our collective stories in a third space that intersects generations, ethnicities, gender and seminary affiliations.  Our common stories transcend all the pseudo “isms” that pigeonhole us.  You all made it possible for us to continue to create a third space — an alternative space that builds bridges, instead of burning them.  Thank you all for making this dream a reality.  Special kudos to the AAWOL authors who have persevered the unpredictable journey of faith in completing the task.

With joy,

Young Lee Hertig

My Fall 2006 Greek Intensive Class... can you guess which one I am?:)

By Joy Wong

Last week, I was asked by Fuller’s Asian American Theological Fellowship (AATF) whether I could think of a recent Fuller seminary graduate (ideally out of seminary for 3-5 years) in Southern California who was 1) Asian American, 2) a woman, and 3) currently serving in a church.  You would think that I’d have the connections to find someone — not only have I been at Fuller since 2005, but also I’ve stayed in the area until now, and I was a leader in the Chinese Student Fellowship for two years.  Even if I didn’t know anyone, I felt certain that someone I knew would know somebody who fit those qualifications.  However, after emailing all my contacts without result and fruitlessly racking my brain trying to think of somebody, I gave up.  It never occurred to me how scarce seminary-trained Asian American women in church ministry are!  (more…)

Not long ago, a friend from seminary told me that it was the opinion of congregants in his Asian American church that those opposed to having women in ministry leadership were not those of older generations, but rather the younger generations.  It was disheartening to hear.  (more…)
